The questionnaire we use

Our English-language test uses the 50-item version of the IPIP Big-Five Factor Markers: the ten-item scale for each of five factors. We retain the source statements and their positive or negative scoring keys. The questions are interleaved so that each group of five contains one statement from each factor.

The IPIP permission statement places its items, scales and inventories in the public domain, including for commercial use. IPIP does not endorse Personality Play. Our interface, explanations and reflection prompts are our own work.

What the five factors describe

  • Extraversion: social engagement, expressiveness and seeking interaction.
  • Agreeableness: reported concern, sympathy and consideration for others.
  • Conscientiousness: preparation, order and follow-through.
  • Emotional stability: steadiness in the face of everyday stress and changes in mood. Higher scores run in the opposite direction to neuroticism.
  • Intellect / imagination: reported interest in abstract ideas, imagination and vocabulary. It is related to the openness family of traits, but this scale should not be confused with an intelligence test or every other measure of openness.

From answers to scores

Following the official IPIP scoring instructions, responses run from 1, “Very inaccurate,” to 5, “Very accurate.” The middle response is “Neither inaccurate nor accurate.” For a positively keyed statement, we keep that value. For a negatively keyed statement, we use 6 minus the response, so 1 becomes 5, 2 becomes 4, and 3 stays 3.

We add the ten keyed responses for a factor, giving a total from 10 to 50. Dividing by ten produces the average shown on your result, from 1.0 to 5.0. For example, a total of 34 gives an average of 3.4. Its position along the bar is (3.4 − 1) ÷ 4 = 0.60, or 60% of the distance from the beginning of this scale to its end.

That bar position is not a population percentile. We do not compare you with a representative national sample, claim you are “more extraverted than 60% of people,” or rank your profile as better than another one. All 50 statements must have a response; an unanswered item is never treated as the middle answer.

Original reflections, kept separate from measurement

The score keys come from IPIP. Personality Play writes the descriptions, practical examples and optional reflection questions around them. Those prompts do not add to your score and are not a second psychological assessment.

Our result wording uses three descriptive bands: averages below 2.5, from 2.5 through 3.5, and above 3.5. These are editorial aids to explain the scale position, not validated cutoffs or permanent personality types. The numeric score remains visible so a small difference around a boundary does not become a dramatic change of identity.

If we introduce new scored questions or change existing ones, they will belong to a separately identified questionnaire version. The evidence for the original scale cannot automatically be claimed for a modified version. Different versions should not be treated as interchangeable.

What this result can and cannot tell you

This is a self-report snapshot: it describes how you responded to these statements. Context, language, mood and your interpretation of each statement can affect the result. We have not independently validated this website’s implementation or its original explanatory text in a representative sample. Evidence reported on the IPIP site relates to its source scales and study samples, not an automatic accuracy guarantee for this site.

The intended use is adult self-reflection. Do not use these scores to diagnose a condition, measure intelligence, screen job candidates, judge another person’s character or predict a relationship’s future. A surprising score is a reason to think about your answers and circumstances, rather than a verdict about who you are.

Privacy, saving and starting again

Answers and scores are processed in this browser. Saved progress is separated from the handwriting game and can be cleared from the Big Five page. Clearing site storage also removes it. If local storage is unavailable, the test still works for the current visit.

Your image is created locally and includes only the dimensions you select. A copied test link points to the public test without your answers or scores. We record general actions such as starting or completing the test according to our privacy policy, without sending questionnaire responses or trait scores as analytics parameters.
